My Review of the Tesco Ej09

Tesco Ej09 Sewing Machine

The Tesco Ej09 sewing machine provides a surprisingly large number of features for such a small price tag. With a good range of stitches and accessories, this machine will appeal to many.

It's main drawback is the fairly unappealing design, which may put some people off.

Tesco has discontinued the Ej09 sewing machine in the UK. For similar machines, check out my guide to sewing machines for beginners!

Tesco Ej09 Overview

The Ej09 is Tesco’s only sewing machine, and can only be purchased in Tesco stores or online at Tesco Direct. Retailing at £60.00, this is a very inexpensive machine which may be a tempting buy for those who are just starting out, don’t want to invest too much, and are not particularly concerned about how their machine looks.

The range of stitches which are available on the Ej09 is rather impressive for such a cheap machine, with a large number of straight, zig zag, elastic and decorative stitches. This is particularly apparent if comparing to the similarly priced Brother LS14, which has a much more limited number of stitches. More information about stitches is provided further down this page.

I was not able to find any information about the power of the motor in the Ej09, but the machine will struggle working with multiple layers of fabric or fabrics which are particularly thick. Probably one of the main drawbacks with this machine is the design, which is not particularly pleasing with its blocky white plastic look. If you consider the appearance of the machine to be an important factor, you might want to stay away from this one.

As you can see from the image above, the bulky design also means that there is a reduced amount of space to the right of the needle, which may be frustrating when working with larger items.

Unlike the Brother LS14, the pressure of the presser foot can be adjusted by a dial on top of the machine. This may be useful if working with particularly thick or thin fabrics.

Features

The Ej09 sewing machine has the following features:

  • 19 Stitches
  • 4-Step Buttonhole
  • Front Load Bobbin

Branding

I am not 100% sure but I have a sneaking suspicion that this Tesco own-brand machine is in fact made by Husqvarna. It bears a striking resemblance to the Husqvarna Huskeystar E10 machine. Please let me know if you think I am mistaken!

Accessories

In additional to needles and bobbins, the Ej09 comes with the following main accessories:

  • All Purpose Foot
  • Buttonhole Foot
  • Zipper Foot
  • Button Sewing Foot
  • Seam Ripper
  • Seam Guide
  • Darning Plate
For such an inexpensive machine, this is quite an impressive range of accessories. It even comes with a small bottle of lubricating oil!
