A look at the differences between the Janome Decor Excel models

The Janome Decor Excel Range

Posted on Posted in Janome

The name Decor Excel is quite something, isn’t it? It brings to mind imagery of haute couture, glamour, sophistication and excellence. In fact Decor Excel is a range of sewing machines from Janome, which are on the market in the UK and can be purchased from John Lewis.

I have put together this page to help demystify the differences between the four Decor Excel models: the Janome Decor Excel 20, the Janome Decor Excel 25, the Janome Decor Excel 30 and the Janome Decor Excel 5024.

Comparing the Different Models

Despite their similar names, the four models are actually all quite different. The summary table below can be used to quickly compare the sewing machines.

Janome Decor Excel 20

Janome Decor Excel 20

The Janome Decor Excel 20 is a mechanical sewing machine with 15 stitches, a four-step button hole and a front loading bobbin. It is quite reasonable priced, and is likely to be a good option for beginners or hobbyists.

Unlike the Decor Excel 25, this machine doesn’t have a separate dial to adjust stitch width. Instead the adjustment of stitch width is integrated into the stitch selector dial.

It comes with 6 presser feet and has a needle threader. It is well built and quite sturdy, and can manage up to 750 stitches per minute.

Janome Decor Excel 25

The Decor Excel 25 is very similar to the Decor Excel 20, but it comes with 25 stitches. The additional stitches are mostly satin and decorative stitches. Another big difference between this and the 20 model is that it has a 1-step buttonhole. It also has a separate dial for adjusting stitch width.

This model is slightly more expensive than the 20 model. It comes with the same 6 presser feet, and also has a needle threader.

Janome Decor Excel 30

The Decor Excel 30 is the only one of these four machines which is computerised.

This machine has a total of 30 stitches, including 6 buttonhole types. I feel that this is a fairly small selection of stitches for a computerised machine in this price range. It has a top loading bobbin, which I like, but only comes with 4 presser feet which is slightly disappointing.

It does have some nice features though, including a needle threader, a start/stop button and a speed slider (so you won’t have to use the foot pedal!).

At a maximum speed of 820 stitches per minute it is slightly faster than the Decor Excel 20 and 25 models.

Janome Decor Excel 5024

Janome Decor Excel 5024

The Janome Decor Excel 5024 is a slightly older model than the other machines in the Decor Excel range. But it is definitely the most serious of the four models. As a mechanical machine with an 85W motor, it is a workhorse which won’t struggle with relatively heavy duty tasks, and it should be able to tackle thick fabrics with ease. In fact it is very similar to the Janome HD3000 model, which is a good quality and well regarded machine. If it’s a heavy duty machine you’re after, check out my guide to the best heavy duty household sewing machines!

The 5024 has a total of 25 stitches, although it only has one buttonhole style.

It has a few welcome features like a needle threader and auto thread tension that really add to the appeal of this machine. As with the Decor Excel 30 I was a little disappointed that it only comes with 5 presser feet, but you can always purchase a few more separately to complete the machine.

It also comes with a hard cover, which I much prefer to the soft cover you get with the 20, 25 and 30 models.

  1. I own a professional drapery Workroom. I sewed on a 5124 excel decor machine for years. Best machine ever. Hate it’s discontinued. You compare it to the HD 3000. Does that model have the needle up/down feature? Do you know of any new 5124 Machines for sale? Thank you.
