Bernina Sewing Machines

THE BRAND

Bernina was founded in 1893 in Switzerland, and takes its name from the Piz Bernina, a mountain in the Alps. These days Bernina definitely has a reputation for high quality machines. In fact I would say it is the most respected brand in terms of quality. The downside of Bernina sewing machines is that they tend to be a fair bit pricier than other brands.

THE MODELS

Bernina's current product range consists of 15 different machines, split into the following categories:

  • 8 Series - 880 model
  • 7 Series - 790, 770 QE, 740, 720 and 700 models
  • 5 Series - 580, 570 QE, 560 and 530 models
  • 3 Series - 380, 350 PE and 330 models
  • Classic machines - 1008 and 215 models

Of course there are numerous other models like the aurora and artista models, but as far as I know these are no longer being manufactured.

Bernina machines are manufactured in either Switzerland or Thailand. The 1008 model is the only purely mechanical machine currently offered by Bernina.

BERNINA SEWING MACHINE REVIEWS
Bernina 1008

Bernina 1008 - Review

The Bernina 1008 is a mechanical machine and as such doesn't have all the mod cons you would get with a computerised machine, but it really does embody quality, durability and style. It is quite pricey, and so is unlikely to be a first choice who are just starting to get into sewing.

Bernina 330 Sewing Machine

Bernina 330 - Review

The Bernina 330 is an excellent computerised machine. It is well built, has outstanding stitch quality, and is relatively easy to get started with. As with most Bernina's though, it is an expensive machine.
